Lianyungang: A Weekend by the Sea or Four Days of Culture

How to plan a short coastal weekend or a slower four-day visit to Lianyungang, covering Lian Island, Huaguoshan, Haizhou Old Town and where to base yourself.

Lianyungang sits where Jiangsu meets the Yellow Sea. Its sights are spread across island beaches, wooded hills, old streets and the literary landscape of Journey to the West, and the city carries both Jiangsu polish and a rougher northern edge. That spread is the main planning problem: two days and four days call for different routes and different bases.

A Weekend: Coast or Culture

Two days leave little room for moving around. Choose one side of the city and stay with it.

Route One: Islands and Sea Air

Day 1: Lian Island and Yangshan Island

Late spring, early summer and early autumn suit the coast best, with soft sand, gentle waves and a light breeze. Lian Island has several separate scenic areas; three of the larger ones fill a day at an unhurried pace. Yangshan Island is nearby if time remains.

Day 2: Haishang Yuntai Mountain, Lianyun Old Street, Xugou

An early start pays off at Haishang Yuntai Mountain, where sunrise and cloud views are the draw. Lianyun Old Street is worth a slow afternoon: old buildings, street life and the port town's everyday rhythm. Finish at the Xugou food area for dinner and local snacks.

Island accommodation varies and guesthouse quality is mixed. A chain hotel near the port in Lianyun District is the more reliable base.

Route Two: Old Haizhou and Huaguoshan

Day 1: Haizhou Old Town, city museum, Minzhu Road, Yanhe Lane

Begin near Haizhou Old Town with breakfast on Guanmiao Lane, a street locals know for morning food. The city museum gives context on local history in the afternoon; Minzhu Road Cultural Street is a short walk for Republican-era architecture. Yanhe Lane is the place for supper and a look at ordinary city life at night.

Day 2: Huaguoshan and Yuwan

Huaguoshan is the city's best-known cultural landscape and the mountain tied to Journey to the West. Sanyuan Palace is one of its key stops. Give it at least half a day, and a full day or two if the cultural sites matter. Yuwan Scenic Area nearby is less famous, with strong scenery and a restorative atmosphere.

The city center works as a base for this route, with shorter transfers to the old town and Huaguoshan.

Four Days: A Fuller Visit

Four days and three nights make a comfortable first visit. This version joins the two weekend routes and groups places by area.

  • Day 1: Haizhou Old Town, the city museum, Minzhu Road Cultural Street, Yanhe Lane for supper.
  • Day 2: Huaguoshan and Yuwan Scenic Area.
  • Day 3: Haishang Yuntai Mountain, Lianyun Old Street, the Xugou food area.
  • Day 4: Lian Island, with Yangshan Island as an optional addition.

The order cuts backtracking and leaves room for slower meals and walks. Drop a stop or add another as interest dictates.

Practical Notes

Choose a base by district: Lianyun District for the coast and port, the city center for the old town and Huaguoshan. The coast is most pleasant in mild seasons; summer heat and weather can affect sea views. Check current opening arrangements, transport and ticket details with official sources before setting out. For island stays, read recent guesthouse reviews rather than relying on one listing. Huaguoshan deserves time; do not squeeze it into a few hours if the cultural sites are the reason for going.
