Lianyungang spreads across three districts and three counties, and the places most visitors come for sit in two different parts of the urban area. Haizhou, the central district, holds the old streets, the museum and the mountain scenery around Huaguoshan. Lianyun, toward the coast, is the base for Maritime Yuntai Mountain, Liandao, the waterfront parks and seafood.
A note on names: today's Haizhou is the merged former Xinpu and Haizhou districts. Locals still say Xinpu, especially for the downtown commercial area, so expect both names on bus stops and in directions.
Haizhou: the city base
Haizhou is the commercial heart of Lianyungang. Suning Plaza, Wanda Plaza and the surrounding shopping streets give the center a busy, practical feel, and the BRT network makes it easy to get around without a car. Hotels run from budget chains to international-brand high-rises. Most of the sights in and around the district lean toward culture and mountains: Huaguoshan, Yuwang, Minzhu Road cultural street, Haizhou Old Town and the Lianyungang Museum.
Staying near the central commercial area puts you close to transport and a wide choice of meals. The trade-off is that this is a city base, not a beach base. Reaching the coast takes time, so it suits travelers who plan to spend most days in the central and mountain areas.
Around Suning Plaza, high-rise hotels dominate and some upper rooms have city views. Near the Su Xin bus station, mid-range chains work well for short stays and families. Neither area is a resort zone, but both are convenient.
Lianyun: coast, port and islands
Lianyun District is where Lianyungang meets the sea. The port area has more services and a broader choice of accommodation than Liandao itself, which makes it a sensible base for seafood, easy access to the waterfront and a comfortable place to return to after a day on the island. Xugou is especially useful for food: the seafood market and nearby restaurants make it a lively place to stay, and there are chain hotels as well as local options.
From Lianyun you can reach Maritime Yuntai Mountain, Liandao, Zaizaiyifang Park and Lianyun Old Street. Liandao has the beach atmosphere many visitors want, but accommodation there can be simpler and more seasonal than in the port area. Check transfer details before booking, especially if you arrive late or carry luggage.
For sunrise and sunset around Maritime Yuntai Mountain, Sucheng is the more atmospheric choice. Small courtyard guesthouses sit below the mountain, some converted from old stone houses. One locally known cluster, Bajianfang, takes its name from its eight rooms; the appeal is quiet, the courtyard and proximity to the mountain rather than nightlife or shopping.
Matching the base to your days
For history, museums and Huaguoshan, Haizhou near the central commercial area and its BRT routes is the obvious choice. For sea, sand and seafood, look at the Lianyun port area or Xugou; choose Liandao if you want to be close to the water and do not mind a quieter, more seasonal setting. A sunrise or sunset at Maritime Yuntai Mountain makes a courtyard guesthouse in Sucheng more sensible than a city hotel.
Without a car, Haizhou is the simplest base for public transport and everyday services. In Lianyun, the port area is more practical than the island for the same reason.
Basing in one district and visiting the other works, but allow for the distance. A hotel that looks close on a map may still mean a long bus ride or a taxi. If your trip mixes Huaguoshan with the coast, decide which experience matters more and build the stay around it.
Before you book
Confirm current bus and ferry schedules, opening arrangements at attractions and any hotel transfer service with an official source before you travel. If you are heading to Liandao or Sucheng, check exactly where the property sits and how you will arrive with luggage. Coastal rooms can book up in warm weather; reserve early for weekends and holidays. The old district names are still used in daily conversation, so keep both Haizhou and Xinpu in mind when checking addresses.
