Qiandao Lake Beyond the Boats: Five Ways Into Zhejiang's Island Landscape

A practical guide to Qiandao Lake in Zhejiang: greenway cycling, the Longchuanwan wetland, forest trails, kayaking, the Water Spirit show, local food and what to sort out before you go.

Qiandao Lake is less a single viewpoint than a web of waterways. It lies in Chun'an County, west of Hangzhou, roughly halfway along the road between Hangzhou and Huangshan. The 1,078 islands in the usual count are the tops of drowned hills, and the shoreline frays into inlets, peninsulas and quiet bays. Most trips start in Qiandao Lake town, near the central lake, where the piers, bike hire and visitor services cluster.

Boats are the obvious way onto the water, and not the only one. The five outings below put you closer to the shoreline: a bike saddle, a wetland boardwalk, a forest trail, a kayak, a seat in a water theatre.

Cycle the greenways around the central lake

Five signed greenways ring the central lake, each with its own character. The Qianfen Line is the long-distance option, about 75 km of flat road passing small islands, fishing boats, old villages and orchards; touring cyclists use it most. The Chunyang Line runs roughly 60 km beside inlets and bridges, with views that change at every bend.

The Pailing Peninsula greenway branches off the Chunyang Line for about 7.3 km between the central lake pier and Shangjiangbu Bridge. Wave-shaped surfaces, cobbles and speed-test strips make it a good pick for families and casual riders.

For something closer to town, the City Landscape Ribbon runs nearly 10 km from the passenger terminal along the central lake to Qiandao Lake Bridge, where it joins the Qianfen Line. Shorter still is the Chengzhong Lake greenway, under 2 km, passing Qiandao Lake Square, a floating musical fountain, the eggshell relief and several places to eat. Ride it in the evening, when the breeze comes off the water and the town lights come on.

Bicycles come from the cycle club, visitor kiosks and hotels. Ask for a current map and route advice before you set out.

Longchuanwan, a wetland in the southwest

Longchuanwan sits in the southwest lake area near Jiangjia Town, the lake's only lake-type wetland: a peninsula of small islands, twisting channels and flat water. Reeds in the Manghuayang area move with the wind, and cormorants and white-necked long-tailed pheasants are regularly seen. Autumn adds red leaves. Plan for a slow walk rather than a checklist.

Forest trails at the Forest Oxygen Bar

The Forest Oxygen Bar fills a wooded valley at Danzhu Wangzi Shan, near the southeast edge of the lake, with streams, waterfalls, boulders and pools. Its trails take half a day at most. Grass sledding, slides, swings and rope bridges keep children busy, though some of it runs only in season.

Kayak on the calm water

Sheltered bays make kayaking easy to arrange. Operators around the lake rent boats and lead guided paddles. Go with a guide or a group, wear a buoyancy aid, and bring sun protection, a change of clothes and a dry bag for your phone. From water level the islands look different: birds overhead, fish breaking the surface.

An evening at Water Spirit

Water Spirit is an evening performance in Qiandao Lake town built on a water stage. Curtains of water fall from above, three large screens carry 3D projections, and a five-part story draws on local culture. It slots easily into the end of a day on the greenways or the lake.

Where to stay and what to eat

Qiandao Lake town is the simplest base for a first visit: piers, cycle hire and restaurants are all within reach. Resorts on Xianshan and Qilin peninsulas are quieter and more self-contained, some with family rooms and indoor play areas.

The fish head is the dish to order, cooked into a milky soup or steamed with chopped chilli or sauce chilli. Immortal tofu is a chilled jelly made from leaf juice and ash, translucent and faintly herbal. Corn cakes are small, yellow and firm, eaten with fermented tofu, chilli paste, pickled radish or fried tofu. Local chicken casserole, river snails, fern shoots, dried tofu and rice soup are also worth ordering.

Practical notes

By road most visitors arrive from Hangzhou on the Hangxinjing expressway and its Qiandao Lake branch; drivers should check current exits, parking and access to trailheads. Bus routes change, so rely on official visitor information for the day's arrangements.

Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons for cycling and walking. Summer is hot and busy on the water; winter is quiet. Dried fish, bamboo shoots, hickory nuts, Qiandao Yuye tea and wild kudzu powder make useful local purchases. Check opening hours, tickets, rentals and performance times with official sources before you travel.
