This journey connects the sandstone scenery around Zhangjiajie with the river towns of western Hunan and the Miao villages of eastern Guizhou. The full sequence runs through Zhangjiajie, Furong, the Red Stone Forest, Fenghuang, Jishou, Aizhai, Huayuan, Chadong and Hong’an, then Xiushan, Huaihua, Zhenyuan, Kaili, Xijiang and Guiyang. It crosses Hunan, southeastern Chongqing and Guizhou; give the transfers as much thought as the sights.

Begin with Zhangjiajie

Set aside separate days for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain. Within the forest park, Tianzi Mountain, He Long Park, Yangjiajie and Yuanjiajie belong to the upper-level sightseeing network. Golden Whip Stream, Shui Rao Si Men and the Ten-Mile Gallery make a different, lower-level day. Laowuchang and its elevated fields are possible additions if access permits.

Choose an entrance after checking the operating transport network. Do not rely on old advice about lodging inside Dingxiangrong village: accommodation and access have changed over time. Wulingyuan can serve as a base without carrying luggage through each day’s sightseeing.

Tianmen Mountain is a separate outing, with cableway, road and internal escalator combinations determined by the booked route. Check the exact entry point and direction. The cliffside walks and Tianmen Cave are reasons to leave this visit a day of its own rather than add it hurriedly to the forest park.

Furong, the Red Stone Forest and Fenghuang

Furong, also called Wangcun, is known for its waterfall setting. The Red Stone Forest across the You River offers a different landscape of red carbonate rock, narrow passages and weathered formations. Then continue to Fenghuang for riverside streets in the evening and another look the next morning.

These stops do not automatically form a convenient public-transport chain. Compare current connections with a licensed shared or private vehicle. Agree the stops, luggage arrangements and where you will leave the trip; Jishou is one possible onward point. Old package fares and claims that tickets can be bypassed are not useful planning advice.

Aizhai, then the border town of Chadong

From Jishou, consider Aizhai Bridge and the nearby Dehang area. The suspension bridge and the winding road below show two very different generations of mountain engineering. A visit to Dehang or Liusha Waterfall depends on your interests, access and water conditions; a traveller’s disappointment on one date is not a permanent verdict.

Continue via Huayuan towards Chadong, also called Biancheng. Across the Qingshui River is Hong’an in Chongqing, with Guizhou close by. This meeting of three provincial-level areas gives the riverside walk its particular geography. Chadong is associated with Shen Congwen’s Border Town; his former home is in Fenghuang, a different stop.

For a boat trip, confirm whether the quote is per person or per boat, its duration and the return point before boarding. Allow time simply to walk the waterfront rather than treating this as a hurried transfer.

Reach Zhenyuan via a workable connection

One possible route continues from Hong’an to Xiushan, then by rail through Huaihua towards Zhenyuan. Check the current timetable before choosing it; several short bus transfers can consume more of a day than expected. Xiushan or Huaihua can provide a break for a meal rather than another rushed connection.

In Zhenyuan, follow the Wuyang River, whose bends shape the town. The riverside, bridges, Qinglong Cave complex and Heping Village area offer a slower rhythm after the longer travel legs. Fenghuang, Chadong and Zhenyuan all stand beside rivers, but they need not feel like interchangeable stops.

Kaili, Xijiang and Guiyang

Kaili is a useful connection for Xijiang. At the village, wooden houses climb the slopes and the evening lights make the valley’s scale easier to see. Visit the viewpoint in daylight as well as after dark if time allows; confirm walking access or available transport. Welcome performances and ceremonies follow local arrangements, so ask about them rather than expecting a fixed daily show.

Return through Kaili and continue to Guiyang. Jiaxiu Pavilion on the Nanming River, Qianling Mountain, Huaxi and Qingyan Ancient Town are possible choices there. Keep the final days flexible. Book current transport and admissions, leave room between connections, and shorten the route if moving between towns starts to crowd out time in them.
