Sanya sits just north of the 18th parallel, a latitude it shares with Hawaii and Kolkata. The comparison is loose; the climate is not. Warm, humid days, steady sea breezes, and forested hills a short drive from the city streets. Most trips start on the coast, and that is the right place to start. The question worth settling early is which bay suits the trip you have in mind, because the four behave quite differently.
The Four Bays, by Purpose
City side: Sanya Bay and Dadonghai
Sanya Bay and Dadonghai sit closest to the city and were developed first. Sanya Bay's coconut-lined waterfront corridor runs for more than twenty kilometres. The water is not as clear as at Yalong or Haitang, but the location is convenient, especially for the western sights such as Nanshan's Guanyin statue and Tianya Haijiao. Dadonghai is a more compact urban base, with beach, food and shops within a few minutes of each other.
Yalong Bay: sand first
Yalong's water is not the clearest in Sanya, but the sand is fine, and for swimming and easy beach days that matters more than visibility. The bay is also close to Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park, so a beach stay can take in an inland half-day.
Haitang Bay: clear water, duty-free
Haitang has the clearest water of the four, though its beach is not uniformly smooth: pebbles and coarse fragments make barefoot walking uncomfortable in places. It is the practical base for Wuzhizhou Island and the large duty-free complex. If shopping and clear water are your priorities, Haitang makes sense. If you want to be in the city, it does not.
Two Rainforest Parks
Yalong Bay National Forest Park and Yanoda appear in most Sanya itineraries. Both offer shade, elevated views and a break from salt and sand, but they suit different routes. The Yalong Bay park is the easier add-on if you are staying on that bay: no long transfer, and it pairs naturally with beach time. Yanoda is the other commonly recommended park, and some local drivers prefer it. Neither replaces the other; choose by where you are based and how much time you want to spend in the car.
The Yalong Bay park has bird's-nest-style rooms, so you can stay overnight. Early morning is the quietest hour, before day visitors arrive. If you are not staying, go early anyway, and treat the forest as a half-day rather than a quick photo stop.
Sights, Grouped West to East
Planning by cluster is the simplest way to avoid crossing the city twice in a day.
- West: Nanshan Tourism Cultural Zone, Daxiaodongtian, Tianya Haijiao, West Island.
- City edge: Coconut Dream Corridor, Dadonghai, First Market, Luhuitou Park.
- Yalong Bay: the beach and Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park.
- Haitang Bay: Wuzhizhou Island and the duty-free complex.
- Fenjiezhou Island: usually a separate excursion; check transport and ferry details locally.
Four Days, Less Back-Tracking
Day 1: Nanshan Tourism Cultural Zone, then First Market later in the day. The first gives the western side its Buddhist landmark and coastal setting; the second is a practical stop for food and city life.
Day 2: Wuzhizhou Island. Give it a full day and confirm ferry times before setting out; sea conditions can affect the crossing.
Day 3: Sanya Bay's Coconut Dream Corridor and Dadonghai, with Luhuitou Park late in the afternoon. Luhuitou works best as an evening stop rather than a rushed add-on.
Day 4: Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park and the Haitang Bay duty-free complex. If you are staying inside the park, split the forest visit between late afternoon and the following morning instead of repeating the same outing.
Picking a Base
Sanya Bay for city access and the western sights. Dadonghai for an urban base near the water. Yalong Bay for sand and forest. Haitang Bay for clear water, Wuzhizhou Island and duty-free shopping. No single base removes every transfer, so pick the one that matches your priorities rather than trying to cover all four bays.
Confirm current ferry schedules to Wuzhizhou and Fenjiezhou, park opening arrangements and duty-free collection rules with official sources before you go. Weather and sea conditions can change plans, particularly for island trips.
