Xiling Gorge runs about 76 kilometers between the upper Yangtze and the outskirts of Yichang, making it the longest of the river's three great gorges. Its length is the first thing to understand. This is not a single walled-in channel but a chain of narrow rock passages and broader valleys, with Badong, Zigui and Yichang strung along it. A cruise and a land-based stay show different parts of that chain.
Reading the gorge from the water
Traveling downstream, the gorge is usually described in four parts: the Xiangxi broad valley, the upper Xiling broad valley, the Miaonan broad valley and the lower Xiling gorge. The names describe a rhythm: open water, compressed cliffs, another interval of space.
High cliffs, shoals and reefs define the narrower sections. Within the main gorge are smaller gorges, including Poshui, Book and Sword, White Dog, Zhenshan, Micang, Beef Liver and Horse Lung, and Lantern Shadow. Streams, springs, rock formations and caves open off the banks. The landscape also carries a literary history. Qu Yuan, Wang Zhaojun, Lu Yu, Bai Juyi, Ouyang Xiu, Su Xun, Su Shi, Lu You and Feng Yuxiang are among the figures associated with it.
Landmarks on the cruise route
Qu Yuan's hometown
Qu Yuan Temple is the representative site of the poet's hometown area. The shrine has been moved and rebuilt over the decades as Gezhouba and the Three Gorges Dam changed the river; the present complex is an expansion of the relocated building. It also serves dam visitors, with shuttle services crossing the Xiling Yangtze Bridge to the dam area. Transfer arrangements can change, so confirm them locally.
Zhaojun Village
Wang Zhaojun, remembered for her frontier marriage in the Han court, came from Wangjiawan in the Xiangxi Valley. The village is organized around her story. Older features include Nannu Well, Niangniang Well, a dressing table and Wangyue Tower; newer additions include a Zhaojun residence, memorial hall, stele corridor and marble statue.
Book and Sword Gorge
On the north bank, a rock high in a cliff crevice resembles a rolled text; tradition calls it Zhuge Liang's book of military strategy. Below it, a stone tapering upward and pointing at the river is the sword. The small gorge takes its name from these two shapes. Look for them before the boat carries you past.
Beef Liver and Horse Lung Gorge
Beyond Book and Sword Gorge, the north cliff has an ochre, layered rock said to look like beef liver, and a darker hanging rock compared to horse lung. The names are earthy, but they are useful: they point your attention to the cliff face.
Three Gorges Dam
The dam is the major engineered sight on this stretch. Excursion boats and coaches use Maoping pier in Yichang as a handling point; from there visitors go ashore for the dam. Three areas are commonly open: Tanziling, the 185 platform and the river-closure memorial park. Tanziling gives the broad view over the dam and river; the 185 platform brings you close to the reservoir level; the memorial park explains the construction chapter.
The ship lift is a separate experience. A vessel enters the lift and is raised to the upper level, letting passengers watch the climb from on board. It shortens transit compared with the old lock sequence, but it is an add-on rather than part of every cruise. Check official sources for current operation and booking.
The lower gorge around Yichang
Below the dam, the Xiling Gorge Scenic Area stretches toward Gezhouba. It gathers several separate sights rather than one continuous walk. The core places are Leizu Temple, Peach Blossom Village, White Horse Cave and Sanyou Cave, with Xialao Stream and forested pockets in between.
Sanyou Cave and White Horse Cave
Sanyou Cave is known for its limestone formations and cliff inscriptions left by earlier visitors in various scripts and styles. The inscriptions are protected cultural relics. White Horse Cave lies across the stream; its name comes from the white dragon horse in Journey to the West, said to have stayed in the cave.
Leizu Temple and Peach Blossom Village
Leizu Temple traces its predecessor to a Ming-dynasty Xiling Mountain Temple. The approach has 108 bluestone steps, with a gate at the 70th and 38 more to the temple door. Annual observances mark the birthdays of the Yellow Emperor and Leizu and a vision festival on lunar dates.
Peach Blossom Village sits on the south bank, close to White Horse Cave, and looks toward Gezhouba. Time a visit for spring, when the blossoms are out and the viewpoint has more color.
Adventure and side valleys
Xiling Gorge Happy Valley
Inside the scenic area, Happy Valley is the activity hub: bungee jumping, canyon swing, giant pendulum and climbing. The bungee platform stands 61 meters above the gorge floor. Several guesthouses and hotels nearby make it possible to combine a quiet night with an active day. Different activities are priced separately; check the official site for what is running.
Three Gorges Waterfall
A five-kilometer trail follows the valley past many cascades; the main Baiguoshu fall drops 102 meters. A viewing pavilion faces it from the opposite slope, and a corridor behind the fall gives the walk its wettest moment. Expect spray and slippery stone, and carry protection for cameras.
Three Gorges Families
This large living-history-style scenic area lies on the river between the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba. It is organized around mountain households, water households and stream-side households. Visits combine boats and walking. A shorter route runs Longjin Stream, Mingyue Pavilion, Bawang Village, Stone Token, Yaoyue Pavilion and Lantern Shadow Stone; a longer one adds Taiji Cat Cave and reverses some of the sequence. Allow half a day at least.
Putting a trip together
On a Three Gorges cruise, Xiling Gorge is often the downstream climax before Yichang. Add two nights in Yichang if time allows: one day for Three Gorges Families, one for Happy Valley or the scenic area. A land-based trip needs more time, about four days, to combine the dam and a Gezhouba cruise, the families, and the side valleys. The classic day excursion links the two dams and the gorge by boat, but schedules and water conditions change; confirm locally.
Do not try to treat the gorge as one attraction. The upper reaches are best seen from a cruise; the Yichang end rewards slower exploration by road and on foot.
Before you go
Tickets, shuttle rules, ship-lift operation, park hours and river access can change with dam management, weather and season. Check official sources for the Three Gorges Dam, Xiling Gorge Scenic Area and individual sites. Some cultural sites have been relocated or reconstructed as the reservoir filled; read them as layers of commemoration rather than untouched antiquities. Carry ID for security checks and allow for queues at the dam.
