Tongli is a water town of stone bridges, narrow lanes and canal-side houses. The sights aren't interchangeable. For a first visit, start with Tuisi Garden, Pearl Tower and Luoxingzhou, the island in Tongli Lake. Add a hand-rowed boat, and Ink Tongli if the schedule fits. The town is compact enough to walk, but a rushed half-day leaves little impression.

Tuisi Garden: A Private Garden Built Around Water

Tuisi Garden is Tongli's best-known private garden. Ren Lansheng laid it out after losing his official post. Next to Suzhou's larger classical gardens, it is small and closely worked. The plan turns on a central pond: pavilions, corridors, rockery and living quarters sit along the water, so the garden reads as an extension of the house rather than a separate park. It is known as the Pasted-on-Water Garden, a compact example of Jiangnan domestic architecture.

A visit is less about covering ground than noticing how paths, windows and water views are composed. The garden is intimate; details reward a slower pace.

Beside the garden is an old opera stage facing a square. Performances run at set times, and visitors stand in the square to watch. The paving carries names of films and television productions shot in Tongli, a small clue to the town's long relationship with location shooting.

Pearl Tower: Not a Tower, but a Grand Household

Pearl Tower is a misleading name. The site is a large official's residence and garden, not a pagoda. Much of what stands today is modern reconstruction; the library building associated with Chen Cui'e is the principal historic survival. The scale still helps: hills, ponds, fish and a sequence of courtyards show how much space a wealthy household commanded, and how enclosed life could be for the women who lived there.

The Chen Cui'e and Fang Qing story forms the narrative spine of Ink Tongli, so a visit here adds context to the evening show. Among the domestic details is a below-ground cool store, where fruit was lowered in baskets and brought up for guests in summer.

Luoxingzhou: A Short Ferry to Tongli Lake

Luoxingzhou sits in Tongli Lake and is reached by ferry from the lake dock. The crossing is short, but the change of mood is immediate: temple buildings, water and trees, with the busy streets left behind. The island brings Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian elements together, which helps explain its layered religious character.

The yellow Guanyin Temple gives the scene a strong colour accent, and red wish ribbons hang from trees near its circular doorway. Wenchang Pavilion is low, but its upper level gives a wide view over the island and lake.

A Hand-Rowed Boat Through the Three Bridges

From the water, Tongli's layout becomes clear. Hand-rowed boats pass beneath the arches of the Three Bridges, with dense greenery along the banks and a changing edge of restaurants, shops and passing visitors. Some banks are lined with lantern-hung restaurants where diners sit by the water; others face small shops and the everyday traffic of the town.

Boats are usually hired by the vessel rather than by seat, so solo travellers may need to wait or share. Boatmen sometimes sing; others simply row and smile. The boat is also a viewing platform in reverse: people on bridges and banks photograph the boats as they pass.

Ink Tongli: A Stage Version of the Town's Story

The large indoor show Ink Tongli is staged opposite the old opera stage square. It uses the romance of Chen Cui'e and Fang Qing as its main line, with dance, martial arts and acrobatics, photographic backdrops and elaborate lighting. The plot is not essential to enjoy the spectacle, but knowing the Pearl Tower connection makes the performance easier to follow.

Where to Stay: Huajiantang at Lize Women's School

Huajiantang occupies the former Lize Women's School, an early Republic-era institution for the education of young women. The hotel keeps the original building's structure while adding its own style. The location, in a lane behind Tuisi Garden, is central but removed from the main flow.

Public areas include a lounge with sofas and self-service drinks, a tea corner, books, a piano and table football. Beyond the lobby, a white wall catches the shadows of branches, and the courtyard has plants, seating, a small pond and a pavilion. Rooms vary in layout and some are separate buildings. The on-site restaurant, Duoduo's Bread Tree, serves meals; prices are higher than at smaller local eateries.

Pacing a First Visit

Tuisi Garden and Pearl Tower suit the morning, when the lanes are cooler and the gardens less crowded. Luoxingzhou takes a ferry crossing and a slower hour; the boat ride can follow in the afternoon. Ink Tongli fills an evening. An overnight stay gives the town a different rhythm after day visitors leave.

Opening hours, ferry times, performance schedules, boat fees and hotel details change. Confirm them with official sources before travelling.
