Spring Flowers by the Yulong River: A Yangshuo Side Trip

Look for spring rapeseed flowers near Xiatangzhai on the Yulong River, then combine a walk or cycle ride with Yangshuo’s river scenery and a longer Guilin visit.

Yangshuo’s spring colour is not limited to green hills. Around March, rapeseed fields near the Yulong River can turn yellow beneath the limestone peaks. The flowers make a pleasant reason to slow down around Xiatangzhai rather than travel elsewhere solely for blossom photographs. Flowering depends on weather and planting, so ask locally before planning a day around it.

Reaching the fields near Xiatangzhai

From Yangshuo town, cycling or a permitted electric-bike rental can turn the journey through the Ten-Mile Gallery area into part of the outing. Check the route and local access rules before setting off. Xiatangzhai’s wharf is the landmark to look for, with flower fields nearby when in season.

A tourist bus is another possibility if a suitable service is running. Confirm the current stop and return rather than relying on an old bus description. If you prefer walking, use the Yulong riverside path and decide on a sensible turnaround point. You do not need to add a bamboo-raft trip simply because you have reached a wharf.

Leave the fields as you find them

March can be rainy, and riverside paths may be slippery or muddy. Shoes that cope with wet ground, and a dry spare pair for a longer trip, are more useful than footwear chosen only for photos. Stay on allowed paths, avoid flattening flowers and keep children close beside the water. These are working fields, not scenery to walk through without permission.

Make room for the river as well

The Yulong River offers a quieter landscape of water and peaks, while West Street gives the evening a busier setting. Performances such as Impression Liu Sanjie and the Guilin Romance show are separate choices; check the current venue, schedule and transport before booking.

The Yulong River

A three- or four-day outline

For three days, begin in Guilin with Elephant Trunk Hill, then choose among Dongxi Alley, Zhengyang pedestrian street and the Rong and Shan lakes in the evening. On the second day, combine a currently operating Li River excursion with Xingping, then continue to Yangshuo for a ride and the flowers. The older Yangdi–Nine Horse Fresco Hill rafting suggestion needs checking against available routes. Keep the third day for the Yulong River before departing.

With a fourth day, there is more breathing room: spend an evening on West Street, give the Yulong outing its own day, and consider Silver Cave before the final departure. Check transfer times before combining activities. The flowers fit into the landscape; they do not need to dictate every hour of the trip.
