A First Trip to Zhangye: Coloured Hills, Old Temples and a Bowl of Noodles

Build a Zhangye visit from city landmarks, the Danxia hills, Mati Temple, Pingshanhu Canyon and Shandan’s horse country, with four local wheat dishes to try.

Zhangye sits along the Hexi Corridor below the Qilian Mountains. Its name is associated with the Han dynasty’s reach towards the Western Regions, while the city’s temples and surrounding landscapes give that history a varied setting. The coloured hills are a strong starting point, but there is enough here to choose more than one kind of day.

Keep a little time for the city

The Bell and Drum Tower is a useful urban landmark, with its layered roof rising above the streets. Give it a place in a town walk rather than only passing through between distant excursions.

Dafosi, or the Great Buddha Temple, dates to the Western Xia period. Its reclining Buddha, roughly 34.5 metres long, is the central work, accompanied by other figures, murals and temple buildings. The sculpture’s scale becomes clearer inside the hall, but the complex is also a place to look at religious art and architecture. Allow a couple of unhurried hours if it fits your day, and follow clothing and photography notices.

Choose between the larger landscapes

Rainbow Danxia is known for colour bands across the hills. Plan around the scenic transport and viewpoints currently open, leaving extra time if sunrise or sunset is the reason for going. The return matters as much as arriving for the light.

Mati Temple offers Buddhist caves and architecture against a mountain backdrop. The Thirty-Three Heavens section and other caves may involve separate tickets or access arrangements. It deserves more than a hurried look at the entrance gate. Check what is included and how much stair climbing the chosen visit requires.

Pingshanhu Canyon is different again, with narrow passages and red-brown rock formations cut into deeper terrain. Viewpoints alone and a descent into the canyon are different levels of effort. Find out the open route and return climb before choosing, and take water, food and sun protection.

Shandan’s horse country

The Shandan horse-farm area gives another scale to the journey: open grassland below the mountains and herds rather than rock formations. It lies well outside a quick city loop, so plan the drive, access point and food before setting off. Food outlets may be limited along a particular route.

Summer meadows and seasonal flowers can be part of the view, while cooler weather changes the grass colour and conditions. Horse riding, demonstrations or races need their own operating arrangements. Agree any activity and price beforehand, follow professional instructions and do not assume all herds are visitor attractions.

Four dishes to understand

Niurou xiaofan is a beef-broth dish made with very small pieces of wheat dough, not a bowl of rice. Beef, starch noodles and red beans can be among the additions. Jia Datou is one restaurant name associated with it.

Saozi mian uses thin noodles in a seasoned soup with diced ingredients such as tofu, meat, scallion and coriander. Liangmao and Heshunyuan are names to look up. Paozhangzi noodles are short lengths of dough, boiled and then served with vegetables, sometimes meat, in stir-fried or soup versions; Sunji Chaopao and Luo Pangzi are further search leads.

Juanzi ji combines chicken with rolled pieces of dough that absorb the cooking juices. Miaoshi is a name associated with this dish. Verify current locations and menus rather than following old prices or an address copied without checking.

Clothes, transport and where to sleep

The continental climate brings marked differences between morning, midday and evening. Pack sun protection and an outer layer, then adapt to the forecast and whether the day is in town, on exposed hills or in grassland. Summer and early autumn are popular landscape seasons, but flowers and events have their own timing.

Zhangye has city hotels and hostels, with some accommodation nearer outlying attractions. Choose according to the route and transfer time. Check current admission components and onward transport, and leave space in the schedule for a meal rather than making every day a race between distant gates.
