Four or Five Days in Henan: Yuntai Mountain, Luoyang, Shaolin and Kaifeng

Use Zhengzhou’s connections to build a route through mountain scenery, Buddhist art and former capitals, without assuming every place is a day trip.

Use Zhengzhou as a gateway, not a daily return rule

Zhengzhou is a practical arrival point for Henan by rail or air, but a regional trip need not return to the same hotel every night. Decide the route first, then compare the stations, road transfers and overnight stops that serve it. Zhengzhou and Zhengzhou East are different stations; confirm the one on your ticket and the transfer beyond it.

The most useful five-day framework is two days at Yuntai Mountain, a day in Luoyang, a Shaolin day and a Kaifeng day. It is still an active itinerary. The direct intercity buses and departure times quoted in older guides may no longer run, so verify each link before booking accommodation around it.

Days one and two: Yuntai Mountain

Yuntai Mountain near Jiaozuo offers gorges, pools and walking rather than one summit attraction. Spend the first day around Hongshi Gorge and Zifang Lake, then choose from Tanpu Gorge and Quanpu Gorge according to access and water conditions. Not every waterfall looks the same throughout the year.

A second day creates room for Zhuyu Peak, the Diecai tunnel approach and Wanshan Temple, or simply a slower version of the first day. Decide by walking ability instead of assuming all visitors can finish the same circuit. Internal transport and queues take time, particularly on holidays.

For an overnight stay, the Anshang service area offers a concentration of rooms, food and transport stops. Other service areas can also work, but compare the precise location and current shuttle arrangements. Ask about the room rather than assuming all village accommodation has the same standard. Plan the transfer onwards to Luoyang only after checking its actual availability.

Day three: Luoyang

Longmen Grottoes deserve a substantial part of the day. The carved Buddhist figures and cliff setting repay attention, and a guide or audio interpretation can help make sense of the work. Do not rush the site simply to fit several distant temples before evening.

White Horse Temple is another major choice. Lijing Gate and the old streets provide a different evening, with food and ordinary city activity. If combining Longmen and White Horse Temple, check the cross-city journey and opening arrangements. An overnight in Luoyang reduces the need to hurry back to Zhengzhou.

Spring peonies are a seasonal addition, not a year-round promise. Choose a garden according to current flowering rather than a fixed set of dates. For food, the Luoyang water banquet offers a sequence of soup-rich dishes; beef soup, bufan soup and tofu soup provide smaller local meals. Order for your appetite instead of recreating a full banquet for two people.

Day four: Shaolin and Dengfeng

Shaolin combines an active Buddhist temple, the Pagoda Forest and the martial-arts tradition. A staged kung-fu demonstration is different from watching everyday monastic practice; confirm where and when performances are offered and what admission includes.

Sanhuangzhai adds a demanding mountain route. A full traverse and a shorter return walk are different plans, so choose after checking the current route, transport and your energy. Do not assume that adding it to the temple visit suits every family.

If you want Songyang Academy, Zhongyue Temple, the observatory or Junji Peak as well, extend the Dengfeng stay. They should not all be squeezed into the Shaolin day. Confirm onward travel towards Zhengzhou or Kaifeng before leaving your accommodation.

Day five: Kaifeng

Kaifeng’s Song-capital history shapes its visitor attractions, but many present-day settings are reconstructions or themed interpretations. Choose Kaifeng Fu, Daxiangguo Temple, Longting or Iron Pagoda according to your interests. Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is a large cultural theme park inspired by the famous painting, with staged programmes; it is not an intact Song neighbourhood.

An evening around the Drum Tower food area or Xiaosongcheng can round off the day. Soup dumplings, barrel-style chicken, almond tea and stir-fried starch jelly are among the foods to look for. Compare current menus and portion sizes.

If you have less time

For four days, keep Yuntai’s two days plus Luoyang and Shaolin, or choose Yuntai, Shaolin and Kaifeng. With three days, Luoyang–Shaolin–Kaifeng is the more focused cultural option; alternatively choose Yuntai and one city. Avoid keeping every destination while removing all the time between them. Current transport, reservations and the final journey home should determine the finished plan.
